Toastmasters Competent Communicator

Finally, I finished the ten projects (speeches) in the Toastmasters Competent Communication manual. My goal was completion within one year and I made it. I started with Toastmasters in June of 2007 when I joined the Grand Rapids Toastmasters, club 404. I had no intention of pursuing a public speaking career, just to improve my communication skills.
Well, my speaking confidence has certainly grown over the past year and I hope my skill at it has too. However, I feel that there is still a long way to go yet. My last speech was a perfect example of why I continue with Toastmasters and I won’t go into details other than to say there was room for improvement, lot’s of room. I felt like the dead man walking after the first minute. It was ugly and I’m glad it happened at a club meeting. Toastmasters also has a leadership track as part of its educational program.
As a new member I accepted the role as club Treasurer and later added responsibilities as the club webmaster and public relations. I recently volunteered to assume responsibility as the Vice President of Education for our club in the upcoming year. It should be an interesting year with a newer membership base, but I have some great ideas to help our club members help each other to meet their toastmaster goals.
My personal Toastmasters goals for the upcoming year include completion of the Competent Leadership and Advanced Communicator Bronze projects, to help my fellow club members improve their communication skills, and to successfully fulfill my responsibility as Vice President of Education. I look forward to the new challenges.
